YES will activate youth for recovery and resilience.
The clock is ticking on the climate emergency. We have less than a decade to transform the way we live. As the Earth heats up, democratic governments are immobilized; a healthy planet and healthy democracies need rising generations to work together to meet the challenges of the 21st century. Youth Environment Service (YES) is a campaign to build broad-based commitments from governments to invest in jobs, national service, and other opportunities for young people to work together, acquire skills and training, and build common purpose and solidarity in protecting their communities from climate change.
We applaud and support the Biden Administration’s announcement of the creation of a Civilian Climate Corps. We are looking forward to working with them in scaling the initiative to include 1 million young Americans and rallying other governments to be ambitious and bold in the climate fight. It is our belief that if any program or initiative should task young people to take on the responsibility of working through the challenges of climate change, that these young people, should, equally have a voice and opportunity to shape the contours and outcomes of both the program and our environmental future.
In lead up to COP26, we will incubate and promote YES by organizing workshops and town hall meetings with elected officials as well as deliberative assemblies with young people to gather their insight on what climate corps programs should look like. Please sign up below if you’re interested in hearing about news and events, joining our working group, becoming a partner, or participating in our deliberative assemblies.
COVID and climate reveal flaws in governance and threaten our future. By investing in youth-led efforts to take on climate change, we can:
• Create economic opportunity
• Restore deliberation and direct feedback to our democratic process
• Cultivate a new generation of purpose-driven leadership
• Mitigate the impact of a warming planet
